DayZ on Linux
DayZ runs well on Linux via Steam + Proton. BattlEye works, and performance is usually on par with Windows.
Distro: CachyOS (recommended)
CachyOS is Arch-based and tuned for gaming. Why it is a good pick for DayZ:
- Kernel with the BORE scheduler and NTSync (a Windows sync primitive that gives a noticeable FPS gain in DayZ compared to older Wine emulation)
- Steam, Wine and lib32/multilib come pre-configured
- Up-to-date Nvidia / AMD / Mesa drivers out of the box
- Beginner-friendly Calamares installer: pick the KDE Plasma desktop and you're done
Alternatives: Bazzite, Nobara, or plain Arch if you like tinkering.
Install Steam and DayZ
Steam is a checkbox in the CachyOS installer. After logging in, search for DayZ and install it (about 37 GB). Then just launch the game; it works out of the box.
Use DZGUI as server browser
The in-game browser is buggy under Proton. DZGUI is the standard fix: it handles mods, filtering and direct connect.
Common gotchas
- The first launch is slow. Proton compiles shaders; give it a few minutes.
- Crackling audio on KDE Wayland? Add
PIPEWIRE_LATENCY=512/48000 %command%to the Steam launch options.
Optional: tweak pack
A/D strafe + lean, SHIFT also holds breath, PvP-tuned visuals (vkBasalt) and an optional crosshair: dayz_linux_tweaks.
